Be Kind to CC Cyclists Effort

STARRS members Dorian and Freddy Ramirez have started a bicycle safety campaign called "be kind to CyClists." It's focusing on improving specific bike safety issues in Corpus Christi and the surrounding area.

The campaign is currently focusing on the following two issues:

  • Alignment of the Ocean Drive bike lane with the 2006 Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (TxMUTCD). The TxMUTCD governs the signage and pavement markers used for bicycle lanes in Texas.
  • Enforcement of Corpus Christi Municipal Code 53–97 which prohibits cars from parking in the bicycle lane on Ocean Drive. Motorists must be educated on the dangers to cyclists from parking in the bicycle lane. The police force should enforce the no parking in the bicycle lane with warnings, tickets and if necessary towing of vehicles.

The campaign is attemping to work with the city on these matters.

Click to download the presentation that Dorian and Freddy Ramirez gave to the City of Corpus Christi Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee in September 2009. This presentation discusses needed improvement to the bike lane on Ocean Drive. Thanks to Henri DeLeon for her help editing this.

Also, the campaign has produced bumper stickers that cyclists and supporters can put on their vehicles:
